The Colours of Me, a Messy Meerkat

The Colours of Me, a Messy Meerkat

I have been asked on numerous occasions about both the colours of my logo and my business name, Messy Meerkat Studios. There's a tale in there for sure.  Who said to keep things simple eh?

Firstly, let me just say I am a purple and turquoise loving woman. The departure from my favourite colours shocked even me. I never considered that at some point I may have a business logo with some of the fiery colours of an African Sunset. But here we are, and there it is.

Maybe I need to take a step backward in the explanation. It actually started with a Meerkat. Contrary  to this, my Spirit Animal is a WOLF??!

As a child I loved running wild when visiting various family member's farms and small holdings. One of my many adventures included a Meerkat (there is a picture of me kneeling behind the cute little critter). This encounter resulted in a lifelong love and appreciation of Meerkats.  They are fierce, loyal little animals who truly do embody community. Elders and young are very much cared for and protected. I highly recommend watching a few documentaries on them if you have not done so already. Building a community is very much part of my business journey so naming it after them just made sense.

The intuitive choice of colours became clearer as I progressed. Although they represent the colours of a fiery African sunset, delving a little deeper into both spiritual practice and colour meaning and psychology made the penny drop fully. My choice was driven by more than "oh look a pretty sunset".

Red is the colour of Muladhara (Root Chakra) - meaning the root of existence. It ties in with instinct, survival and sense of security. In colour psychology terms red is associated with excitement, passion, danger, energy and action.

Orange is the colour of Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra) - where the self is established. It is associated amongst other things with our sense of individuality, creativity and sensuality. A vessel for all our stored energy. The colour orange represents creativity, adventure, enthusiasm, success, and balance.

Yellow is the colour of Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra) - considered the “city of jewels” where we find confidence, wellbeing, and inner strength. It is also associated with our wants and desires including the willpower necessary to achieve these. The colour yellow revolves around sunshine. It evokes feelings of happiness, positivity, optimism and summer and is also associated with success and confidence.

Being both brave and bold and starting a business in unfamiliar territory takes courage, fortitude and passion. The colours meshed so perfectly with this and my love of a small, feisty and brave little animal.

So where does the Messy bit come in? Well, I played with Meerkat Magic as a name initially. For some reason this did not resonate. I looked at myself, a little bluntly I might add and noted that when I create, neat and tidy is really not part of that happy little picture. Creation is messy and I am....well a messy Meerkat.

So, on the 14/2/2021, Messy Meerkat was born as a registered business in British Columbia Canada.

I channel my inner Meerkat daily as I work towards my 3C's - community, collaboration and creation.

Until next time.
